As a structural building component, wood offers many environmental benefits, including the ability to maximize carbon storage and minimize carbon dioxide emissions associated with the design, construction and operation of buildings. Architects in Europe are already using “massive timber” structure design principles and techniques to take advantage of wood’s carbon benefits, driving positive change through the power of wood design. However, these techniques are not yet widely used in the US.

This presentation will connect structure with architecture by introducing a variety of innovative structural wood products and systems. Case study examples of innovative projects in Canada, the US and Europe will be used to illustrate how you can apply these products and systems to your future building designs. These creative and imaginative structures are designed to take advantage of wood’s environmental and structural benefits and will inspire you to blend structure back into architecture using massive timber and other wood systems.

Speaker Bio: Lisa Podesto, PE is a Senior Technical Director for WoodWorks and the National Lead for Building Systems. She earned her BS in General Engineering from Cal Poly, SLO and her MS in Civil Engineering from San Francisco State. She is the past State Chair of the SEAOC Sustainable Design Committee, and member of ASCE SEI and ICC.
