Project Profile: M I Architects, Inc.
A newly constructed Shell gas station located at 390 Hickey Boulevard, Daly City, CA 94015 opened for business in August 2015. The project was a reconstruction of an old Shell gas station. The new project consisted of a 2,800 sf convenience store with a 700 sf office on the second floor. A 1,040 sf self-service, drive-through car wash tunnel with a 266 sf car wash equipment room. The gas station includes a fuel canopy with five multi-product fuel dispensers and two 20K gallon underground storage tanks. The project sits on 29,000 sf. of land and was developed on a sloped lot. The proposed building incorporates a modern architectural design, compatible with the neighborhood architecture aesthetics. Included in the design is cement plaster finished walls and pilasters, ACM panel-finish soffit wall and roof fascia, metal siding wall surfaces, brick veneer waistcoat, column trims, enhanced roof line, corbels, aluminum louvers and clerestory windows. A new earth tone paint scheme and landscaping were also part of the renovation. The onsite circulation around the fuel canopy and car wash drive-through was creatively laid out. The site constraints and potential impacts on the city streets were carefully considered as well.
Within the past 20 years, service station businesses have been faced with major transitions from only offering auto services to providing a one-stop shop for the daily commuter or patron. The transformation was not by accident, it is a result of the advancement in the technology of the auto industry (newer cars require less frequent service).
