Sharon Simpson and her late husband Barclay, founder of Simpson Strong-Tie, have created a unique and extraordinary garden at their Orinda home. As committed supporters of the arts, they have collected an impressive selection of sculptures from internationally renowned as well as local artists. Over the years, the garden and the art have evolved together, resulting in a magical environment. Join us for a special tour of this private garden.
On a one acre site with multiple elevation changes, there is no shortage of “oh my” moments. Upon entering, the artistic tone is set by a playful abstract metal gate leading to the lower garden with its boxwood spheres and gently arching pergola. This part of the garden has a more formal structure, organized as rooms of color, with plants and sculptures creating the partitions. Meandering to the upper garden you pass weathered steel-clad walls, shade-loving perennials and, of course, more wonderful sculptures. The upper garden is a stone and steel terraced hillside abundantly planted in a mesmerizing palette of textures, colors and shapes. Viewed from the kitchen and adjoining deck, this garden is an ever-changing source of beauty and tranquility throughout the year.
For the past 18 years David Manlove, owner of Indian Rock Landscapes, has been involved in the design and renovation of the Simpson garden. As a licensed landscape and building contractor for over 26 years, his design/build firm has participated in all aspects of renovating and maintaining the landscape. Whether working with plants, stone, water or wood, there is always an eye on detail and preserving the artistic integrity of the garden’s legacy.
