Associate Members
The following individuals are Associate Members of the AIA. While they are not licensed architects, many are actively working to earn their architect’s license.
Once a candidate has fulfilled all the necessary requirements, he or she is eligible to receive a license to practice architecture in California. Those requirements are as follows:
- Eight years of post-secondary education and/or work experience as evaluated by the California Architects Board (including at least one year of work experience under the direct supervision of an architect licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction or two years of work experience under the direct supervision of an architect registered in a Canadian province)
- Completion of the Intern Development Program (IDP)
- Successful completion of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)–seven exams
- Successful completion of the California Supplemental Examination (CSE)
In California design professionals (aka “unlicensed persons) are allowed to provide many services. Please click here for a list of what services a design professional may and may not provide.
