Work at the Intersection of Sustainable Urban Planning and Visual Communications as our Bay Area Planning/Graphic Design Lead.

Our Bay Area region is a blend of creative and technical staff in our San Francisco, Oakland, Walnut Creek, and San Jose offices. We’re looking for a leader with a background in urban planning who can confidently combine their knack for project management, graphic design, and staff development into their day-to-day role. This individual would have a passion for inspiring others, generating creative ideas, and translating goals into actionable outcomes.

We expect this person to help guide and mentor our Bay Area visual communications staff, a group of 10 planner/designers, GIS specialist, and marketing coordinators. They would do so through collaborating and asking questions that aid in producing top-notch visuals, where key messaging can be easily interpreted. We will empower this individual to enhance our reputation for producing high-quality visuals in the region, keeping us at the forefront of visualization trends in transportation. The right candidate will be:

  • Dialed in on the tools needed to succeed.You have a strong understanding of graphic design principles and awareness of current trends, proven experience with high-quality graphic production, and an interest in leveraging new technologies and techniques.

Fehr & Peers is seeking a leader who can combine graphic design, project management, and staff development with a background in the urban or transportation planning field. Your passion for inspiring others, generating creative ideas, and translating goals into actionable outcomes will play out across a variety of applications.

Responsibilities

Guide a team of technical professionals, supporting day-to-day operations and aspirational goals. You’ll serve as a trusted advisor committed to:

  • Regularly checking in with and visiting staff in our four Bay Area offices
  • Balancing staff workload and coordinating with office operations
  • Pairing staff interests with project and professional growth opportunities
  • Recruiting and growing the Bay Area Visual Communications group, as needed

Work in a highly collaborative setting. Our workflow emphasizes flexible, open approaches to problem solving and communication. You’ll be expected to:

  • Articulate and synthesize ideas, enabling you to brainstorm with peers and clients, provide constructive feedback on all matters of design, and produce original content that elevates the quality of our work
  • Apply your knowledge of transportation and visual communications to distill complex concepts into intuitive visuals

Train and mentor visual communications staff on:

  • Technical skills related to graphic design, cartography, and data visualization
  • Professional skills involving project management, client interactions, and marketing

Grow our visual communications practice. Your technical proficiency and familiarity with the Bay Area will help us bolster the type, volume, and quality of our visual products. To accomplish this goal, you will:

  • Work with other leaders to define goals
  • Help identify new opportunities for applying visual communications within existing projects and in new project pursuits
  • Assist with preparing scopes and budgets for visual communications tasks
  • Work directly with clients to understand their needs and anticipate future opportunities
  • Contribute to companywide initiatives by participating in the planning and execution of actions that shape Fehr & Peers’ visual identity

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • At least four years of graphic design experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and ESRI ArcGIS
    • Infographics
    • Mapping
    • Photo simulations
    • Branding
    • Document Layout
  • At least two years project management experience; demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple offices preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in the transportation planning field preferred.
  • Professional experience in urban or transportation planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or related field. Understanding of transportation planning and engineering principles and applications highly desirable.
  • Experience training and mentoring others.

This position location is for any of our four Bay Area offices located in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Walnut Creek.
