Join us for a Lean Happy Hour to learn and support each other in our Lean endeavors! Take part in an open conversation in a safe, small and low-pressure environment about the topics that are relevant to our Lean community. We want to hear about the problems you are solving, the issues you want to solve, and lessons you’ve learned on your Lean Journey. No previous Lean experience is required. Based on our conversation with you, you’ll help us provide more relevant topics for our monthly presentations.

Participants from cross functional roles as designers, constructors, owners, trades partners, and associations propose discussion topics around any subject about which they want to learn – THERE ARE NO IRRELEVANT DISCUSSION TOPICS! Each proposer takes 15 to 30 seconds to pitch their topic, written on a sticky note, to the group. Once all topics have been pitched, voting begins to establish a priority for discussing the topics. Topics are then ordered from highest to lowest votes and examined accordingly. Participants will receive 8 minutes of time to discuss the topic. After 8 minutes there will be a ‘thumbs up/ thumbs down’ to decide whether or not the discussion should continue. Thumbs up equals 4 more minutes on the clock. This happens until it is agreed that the topic has been discussed to satisfaction. Takeaways are considered and then the topic with the next largest number of votes is addressed.

Four architects talk about their journeys in Lean to increase value and reduce waste in their work. Lean Construction techniques and processes come from the manufacturing world where a step saved is a dollar earned. Production system based on Lean values efficiency and productivity.

When these principles and practices are applied to an iterative process such as designing a building, they impact the way architects work and add value in their work.  Working in Lean is often described as a journey rather than a state. Four architects describe their respective Lean journeys and how their work has been impacted.

Please join us as we hear from architects on how Lean Construction has impacted their practices. Each panelist and Lean practitioner will present how Lean Construction techniques are used in their design processes and discuss cultural shifts within their organizations.


Denis J Stroup, AIA is a Senior Associate at HGA Architects and Engineers with over 24 years of experience, the last 15 years delivering acute healthcare projects in California.  He is often called on to head up multidisciplinary teams for larger projects in the role of a design team leader.  He possesses a strong leadership proclivity leveraging lean project delivery tools and methodologies in all projects he is involved in both large and small.

Rob Williamson, AIA is a licensed architect and Project Director in the San Francisco office of Taylor Design.  Rob earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture from the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design and an MBA from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. He has worked extensively with the California Division of the State Architect (DSA), various campus agencies, and local building authorities in the permitting and construction of projects ranging from tenant improvements and alterations to new, ground-up facilities. Rob employs lean principles throughout the design process to help identify and understand the user values that contribute to these experiences, and to ensure that the process remains aligned with these values every step of the way.

Marianne O’Brien, FAIA is a Principal with SmithGroupJJR with more than 30 years of experience in the field of architecture leading projects and practices. She is recognized for her focus on collaborative project delivery through alternative methodologies and the application of Lean Principles. She was a panelist at the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) national conference opening general session in 2011 and has presented nationally and internationally at Tradeline, SCUP, and AIA conferences.

Todd Henderson is a principal at Boulder Associates with 21 years of architectural experience, mostly in the healthcare market. A self-described ‘change agent,’ Todd led Boulder Associates’ successful shift to BIM and now works to further lean-inspired transformation of his company’s culture and beyond.

Come and hear from the UHS Henderson Hospital team as they race through primary construction and finishing. This serves as a follow-up presentation to the one given last year during the design phase of the project. This time, the design and construction team will cover Implementation of an Integrated Project Delivery System, Set Based Design, the Last Planner System, the Lean Process and Productivity in Material/Handling, the Lean Process and Team Design/ Construction Collaboration and Management.

President’s Letter: A Better Way

October_ArchNews DRAFT pg 1-5_Page_2_Image_0001Last spring, we held a monthly program on Lean Construction with a panel of practitioners representing architects, builders and owners. At the end of the meeting, we did a plus/delta (that’s where suggestions for improvements on the presentation, delta, and encouragement for continuation, plus, are noted). One of the deltas was that we didn’t have enough time to get more detailed information about Lean Construction.

As a countermeasure to that specific delta from the program, we have partnered with the LCI NorCal COP to present our first joint monthly program. Following to that monthly program from last year, the Lean Construction Institute’ s Northern California Community of Practice (LCI Nor Cal CoP) reached out to our chapter to host their monthly programs. Its been a great partnership between our organizations in building relationships and community around reducing waste and increasing value in projects using Lean Construction techniques.

In case you weren’t able to attend the program, here is a synopsis of Lean Construction. The three main goals of Lean are increase value, reduce waste and respect people. Increasing value is an easy goal to understand. Increasing value for the customer is first understanding what the customer wants and modifying the processes to deliver. Reducing waste is another goal in Lean. Eliminating steps that don’t add value (see previous goal) in the processes to focus on doing only those things that add value. The third goal is respecting people. This one is a little harder to understand. How does respecting people make for a better way?

One way to respect people as a part of Lean Construction, is to solicit input from people doing the work. Instead of drafting a detail in CAD, stamping it and issuing it as an ASI, the trade person doing the work can be tapped for specific knowledge on how to build that detail and improve it before it is issued to the field. Or the contractor can understand the design intent from the architect before building it and simply “follow the plans” that may not convey the intent. Each of us brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise to the project and not utilizing them for the benefit of the project is a form of waste we try to reduce.

The September monthly program will be a joint program hosted by the Northern California Community of Practice for the Lean Construction Institute ( Nor Cal COP LCI) and The American Institute of Architects, East Bay to engage the AEC community in sharing knowledge about lean design and construction as a project-based  production system. The program will be a moderated panel of owners who are engaging design and construction team to work utilizing lean construction tools and techniques.

  • Be able to state at least three ways lean  project delivery can improve project outcomes in design and construction projects.
  • Be able to identify two best practices in building collaborative delivery teams.

Join members of the Van Ness and Geary Campus Hospital to learn about how this team is setting up production and labor tracking. Topics will include initial production tracking framework and implementation during construction. The goals of the program are small sample size reporting to create leading indicators, help to steer production, and accuracy and transparency. We will go over the lessons learned regarding what to track, and how to best support production.

A good production tracking system that relies on high-frequency checks with small and informed batches that are aligned with the schedule will provide valuable insight to production and financial management.

Architects and contractors have historically had a challenging relationship. Evolving innovations in technology, lean processes, and owner demands for more value, pushes all participants to reset the OS for collaborative design delivery.  Both designers and the builders need to re-examine past processes and deeply held beliefs in order to reset the OS to improve design project delivery.

In this presentation, Bruce Cousins, AIA of SWORD Integrated Building Solutions will discuss the current state of a collaborative (partnering or design/build) approach between designers and builders and explore ways that he and others are working to improve the collaborative design process to address the needs of designers, builders and owners.

Bruce has been on both sides of design and construction throughout his career and would like to draw on the attendees’ experience by facilitating a discussion of the challenges faced in collaborative design efforts; ways that trust was established, designers were compensated, design solutions were generated and if any shared great practices can be gained from the collective experience of the audience.

Learning Objectives

1. Understanding that Lean is an operating system comprised of principles and tools
2. Understanding how the principles and tools are relevant to concurrent and collaborative design process in integrated project delivery
3. Understanding how a Integrated Design Management process using primary Lean management practices and tools, such as: BIM Execution Plan, Pull in Planning, Level of Development and Collocation in Big Room in project delivery and its role in improving collaborative or concurrent design practices Project Validation and Design Development Phases.

The goal of the kaizen event is to improve safety, quality, and productivity by developing standard operations for the stripping, set up, reinforcing, and placing of precast systems.  The change we are looking to bring about was to go from a team who constantly had to look to their supervisor for what to do next to a team where each employee knew exactly what their role was in completing all the work.

Kaizen events can introduce dramatic change to a process with the potential for great results.  However, the power of kaizen must be applied with the culture of the organization in mind.  In this presentation, we will learn how managing the preparation for a kaizen can go very well, or very badly.

The presentation will be followed by a networking session with heavy appetizers and a hosted bar.

Please join us for a “State of the Union” for the Lean Construction Institute and P2SL.  Representatives from both organizations will report out on their proposed initiatives for 2015 as well as their successes from 2014.  LCI will present on both the NorCal Community of Practice as well as on the results from the National Congress in October and National Initiatives.  P2SL will report on their current research initiates and future goals.

The presentation will be followed by a networking session with heavy appetizers and a hosted bar.

Attendees should get a general understanding of the organization of the LCI NorCal Chapter, its goals for 2015, ways to get involved, and the upcoming event schedule.  Attendees should also get an understanding of P2SL, how it works and how to get them involved in future projects.
