This special program celebrates the hard work and creativity of architects, urban planners, design professionals and students. It was established to recognize exemplary projects that are still on the boards, creative conceptual work and innovative representations of projects.

2009 Unbuilt Design Awards Jury:

  Richard W. Thompson, FAIA, AICP, Los Angeles

Richard Thompson, FAIA is principal in charge of the Urban Design and Planning Studio at AC Martin Partners. Under his leadership, the studio has produced an award-winning portfolio in campus master planning, new community planning, urban mixed-use development and urban revitalization here and in Asia . As evidence of their success, all of AC Martin's master plans have been approved by their respective communities and institutions and guide the architectural design that follows. Richard has also directed the preparation of 16 college and university master plans, each defining a vision for growth and enhancement.

  Anne Fougeron, AIA, San Francisco

Anne Fougeron, AIA founded the nationally-recognized design firm Fougeron Architecture more than 20 years ago on the premise that designing great buildings and providing more personal service were not mutually exclusive goals. The firm's projects exhibit a strong commitment to clarity of thought, design integrity and quality of architectural detail, receiving awards from all levels of the AIA and other organizations. Ranging in scale from residential and mixed-use housing to commercial, civic and health care, Anne's work has been widely featured in publications such as Architectural Record and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Mark S.T. Anderson, AIA, San Francisco

Mark Anderson, AIA is a founding principal of Anderson Anderson Architecture, and has broad experience in building design and construction as an architect, general contractor and construction craftsman. In partnership with his brother, Peter Anderson, AIA he has designed and constructed numerous building projects in the United States and Japan—including residential, public and commercial commissions—and has also directed research projects and public art installations in the United States and Japan.  Mark’s design work focuses on new sustainable construction technology adapted for unique sites and cultural conditions. He lectures frequently in the U.S. and Asia on his design work and teaches design studios as well as seminars on creative design and fabrication technology as a member of the design faculty in the Architecture Department at the University of California , Berkeley . His design courses particularly focus on design imagination, artist collaboration, construction system prototyping, and infrastructure system design applied to sustainable environmental issues in urban areas.

3. Conceptual

4. Student & Recent Graduate: A full-time student currently studying architecture, planning or urban design; or one who graduated in 2007 or later.

5. Innovative Architectural Representation: Given to the entrant demonstrating the most innovative, artistic and effective presentation of an architectural project through drawings, renderings, models, diagrams, etc. (submission of digital images).

Eligibility

  • For Categories 1 & 2 : The AIA East Bay area covers the four Northern Californian counties of Alameda , Contra Costa, Napa and Solano.
    • The project must be envisioned and/or designed by an architect/designer of the AIA East Bay area.
    • If the architect/designer resides outside the AIA East Bay area, the work must be intended to be completed within the AIA East Bay Area.
    • Work must have been commissioned since January 1, 2005 .
  • For Categories 3 - 5 : Entrants must live or work within a 100-mile radius of the AIA East Bay office.

All significant contributors to the design of the project must be given credit as part of the submission. Projects designed by joint venture or associated architects should be submitted by one firm/person only; credit for all design participants is to be noted in the concealed identification form.

Projects that have won other awards or that have been previously published remain eligible.
