AIA SV: Reuse, Deconstruction, & Demolition (1.5 LU | HSW)

The course will be a panel discussion surrounding Material Deconstruction and Reuse, highlighting an interdisciplinary group to share their insight regarding contributing to and benefiting from the material reuse economy. The panelists’ backgrounds will afford us a look at the demolition/deconstruction process and the opportunities available for reuse at this stage of a building’s life, as well as methods to then give new life to materials in newly built buildings.

Building materials reuse and designing buildings for repurposing saves vital natural resources, reduces carbon emissions and landfill waste and saves natural habitats, while providing good paying jobs.  All of these aspects help reduce the significant impact of the build world on human populations, not only in the place of the building, but in every spot on the planet where building materials are sourced, manufactured, transported, assembled, demolished and dumped.  The sum of these benefits to humans and all species on the planet is enormous.
