Building Electrification and Decarbonization (1.5 LU|ZNCD)

As the world faces the effects of Climate Change the building industry is changing its design and construction practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (decarbonize). This session will explore why building electrification is a key pathway to building decarbonization, which combined with a renewable grid and energy generation will have California reach carbon neutrality by 2045. This session details the barriers to building electrification, California energy code updates, MEP technology and smart design strategies to achieve cost conscious and carbon efficient all-electric buildings. The session ends with all-electric example projects including offices, schools, laboratories, and multifamily residential.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Why building electrification is key to a carbon neutral future
  2. How to overcome all-electric design barriers, including California’s energy code
  3. Understand building technologies used in all-electric buildings
  4. Embodied carbon considerations

Hosted at Lowney Architecture's Office

About Your Speakers

Marco Alves | PAE Consulting Engineers, Associate Principal

Marco has more than 20 years of experience in mechanical systems design and project/firm management. A skillful engineer and excellent communicator, he continually seeks to improve project-team coordination and collaboration. Marco has been involved in the design of numerous all-electric, net-zero efficient, and resilient projects including the new LEED Platinum and Net-Zero Energy Sunnyvale City Hall in Sunnyvale, California. Marco has presented various time on the topics of electrification and decarbonization at SCUP and I2SL (LAB21).

Alan Shepherd | PAE Consulting Engineers, Principal

Alan is a mechanical engineer with over 25 years of experience. A thought leader in building systems and performance, Alan promotes innovation by helping clients obtain a clearer understanding of how they can measurably achieve their project goals. He excels at working closely with architects, owners, and fellow designers to produce integrated passive and active building systems that deliver high-quality building environments using the minimal quantity of energy. Alan is a frequent speaker on high-performance building design and has authored papers on the integration of building systems and facades.
