Michael Pyatok, FAIA Presents “Affordable Housing in the US: A Waste of Time and Effort?” | Housing Forum 2022

Exploring Solutions to Solve the Housing Crisis

Pyatok’s talk will include:

  • A review of the economic, social and political causes of the US housing crisis for the past hundred years, and the country’s persistent inability to solve it and reasons for continuing to address this issue, in spite of Capitalism’s intentional and unintentional reasons to perpetuate the problem.
  • Half dozen cases of affordable housing his firm has designed within the present convoluted system for producing affordable housing.

Michael Pyatok, FAIA, has been an architect and professor of architectural design for 55 years. Since opening his office in 1984, he has designed over 40,000 units of housing for lower-income households in the US and abroad.

At the heart of Mike’s work is the participatory design process he uses to deeply involve residents, community members, and stakeholders in the revitalization of low-income communities and strengthening of mixed-income neighborhoods. Using hands-on modeling exercises, Mike helps communities identify their core needs and plans how to meet those needs through quality design.

In 2013, the AIA honored Mike with the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture, in recognition of his contribution to the design of affordable housing. Mike is Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and an invited lecturer at UC Berkeley. In 2021, Mike retired from PYATOK as Founding Principal, and contributes to office projects on a consultatory basis.
