WEBINAR: Small Firm Forum: How to Not be Remote, Remotely (1 LU)

A normal chapter office meeting will not be possible this month, and maybe some other months in 2020.  This leaves a bit of a void as our monthly meeting gave many of us strength, knowledge and energy. RSVP is required.

So we thought to run an experiment for April that might allow us to share our experiences and learn something useful.

The chapter has a Zoom account that allows up to 100 people to gather, far more than normally attend our meetings.  Many of us have minimal experience with remote collaboration software, and it is natural to wonder what it does well and what it does not do well.  Some of us will probably end up adding it to the toolbox we use in our architectural practices.

So our meeting will have two objectives:

  1. Share with other SFF members the things we are learning, thinking and experiencing in this unprecedented situation.

  2. Experience first hand remote conferencing with one of the available tools for this.

We will do our best to have this go smoothly. There may be things that do not work as we would like, but we will learn from those too.

We will provide more information on the technical aspects in a follow up email. Hopefully the technology will not get in the way.  It should support our efforts not be the reason for them.

We expect that hearing how all of us are doing, and what we are thinking, will be far more interesting.

Here are some questions you might ponder.  If you have other good questions you would like to ask the group, bring them!

  • How has social distancing affected the way you work and the progress of your projects?

  • Has this extraordinary situation led to changes in your thinking as to what is important and what is not?

  • What has been your experience with municipal agencies like building and planning departments?

  • How do you assess the economic impacts on your practice?

Learning Objectives:

  • 1. Gain a perspective on the ways architect are adapting their practices to function during a pandemic.
  • 2. Learn how your peers see the profession working after the pandemic passes.
  • 3. Learn how remote collaboration software works with a sizable number of participants.
  • 4. Gain an understanding of the limitations of remote conferencing.
