UC Berkeley’s Innovation Zone | BDA

Please join Berkeley Design Advocates in person for their 2024 kick-off meeting on Wednesday, January 10 at 12 noon for a presentation by Wendy Hillis, Assistant Vice Chancellor and UC Berkeley Campus Architect who will present University’s proposed Innovation Zone, which is currently in environmental review.
The Innovation Zone project site currently comprises several parcels, including University Hall, its annex, the university parking lot immediately to the west of University Hall, and UC-owned commercial buildings located at 2136-2140 University Avenue (Ernest A. Heron Building) and 2154-2160 University Avenue (Martha E. Sell Building), which are city-designated landmarks. The total footprint is about 80,000 square feet.  The proposed project would demolish all existing structures and redevelop the project site with two laboratory buildings with vehicle parking.
The two proposed buildings – the South Building and the North Building – would include offices, and other collaborative meeting spaces, and would house researchers, faculty, and students from multiple disciplines.  Together the built space would be almost 500,000 square feet.  The North Building would also include a parking garage.   The project would not result in UC Berkeley student population growth, but the proposed project could house almost 1,100 new workers (likely in the private sector).
In addition to the Innovate Zone discussion, Ms Hillis will also outline other University projects focused at Oxford and Bancroft.
