ON DEMAND & VIRTUAL: Improving Sustainability and Durability of Wood Windows and Doors Using Acetylated Wood (1 LU | HSW)
This event is ON DEMAND and can be taken anytime!
Builders and architects in North America are always looking for new ways to incorporate sustainable and cost-saving materials. Wood is known as a visually appealing material but has inherent limitations when it absorbs water. Acetylated wood has several benefits, including increased dimensional stability, water resistance, and a longer lifespan. Its use in sustainable construction projects helps contribute to LEED v4 points and it has a negative carbon footprint by using responsibly sourced timber.
This course will introduce and describe acetylated wood and how it’s made and will explore how and when to use it in windows and doors as well as the many benefits of acetylated wood in window and door applications.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about acetylated wood and its history and how its sustainability characteristics improve green building projects.
- Examine why windows and doors constructed with acetylated wood are more durable, sustainable, and energy efficient and discuss various applications.
- Review the performance benefits and environmental advantages of acetylated wood, understand how the chemical process of acetylation improves the wood, and how performance measures are tested.
- Explore case studies in historic preservation, sustainability, and extended duration projects where acetylated wood windows and doors were specified.
