Montclair Residence – Tierney Conner Architecture

Originally from Diablo Magazine

Architects, builders and home designers share the details of the stories behind their residential projects.

Oakland firm Tierney Conner Architecture was asked to create a versatile, modern design that could transition between many functions for a lively family of four. The result is a complete transformation of spaces that were disconnected and cluttered into a bright, cohesive home. Now the family has an adaptable home that can accommodate one of their favorite past times—entertaining large groups of friends!

Inside, the floor plan is reorganized to create distinct public and private areas. The kitchen opens to the entry, living area, dining area, and patio. A material palette of stone, walnut, and painted woodwork is utilized throughout the spaces. An existing brick fireplace is refaced with limestone and acts as an anchor to the renovations surrounding it on four sides. Brightly colored yellow accents provide orientation amid the shifting perspectives within the home.

Large double doors off the kitchen open onto the new patio where tile, concrete, and planting enclose the space. With such direct connection, the parties easily flow from inside to out! Montclair Residence exudes a playful, rich, and light-filled flow emblematic of modern California living.
