New AIA CA Sponsored Bill Signed into Law by Gov. Newsom

AB 1010 is the AIA CA sponsored bill to enact a new continuing education requirement.  It requires architects complete 5 hours of CE in Net Zero Carbon design every two years.  This will be in effect for the 2023 renewal.  AIA CA will develop courses and make them available for free for the 2023 renewal.

Also, we have sponsored language in another bill, AB 830, which we expect the Governor to sign as well.

AB 830 contains language written by AIA CA and several attorneys to restore freedom in how some newly formed architectural firms can name themselves.  In late 2019 the California Secretary of State’s office adopted a new interpretation of existing law and began rejecting the formation of new architectural general business corporations that included a last name of a principal and any variation of the “A” word in its title (e.g. Smith Jones Architects, Inc.).  AB 830 restores the naming freedom to newly formed architectural general business corporations.  If it is signed into law, AB 830 will go into effect January 1, 2022.
