2018 Design Awards: Exceptional Residential

The AIA East Bay Exceptional Residential: Bay Area Regional Design Awards is a unique design awards program  established to recognize the best in the Bay Area housing design. ExRes 2018 emphasizes the important impact excellent design has on everyday living and our communities. Criteria to be used by the jury include quality of design, resolution of the program idea, sustainable responsibility, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique. Click here to register.

Project Eligibility

  • Projects must have been completed since January 1, 2011.
  • AIA East Bay members may submit projects located anywhere.
  • Non-Members may submit residential projects located in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano, Sonoma Counties.

Project Types

Residential projects of all types are encouraged, including:

  • Remodels/Additions/Renovations
  • Interiors
  • New Construction
  • Small Budgets (under $30,000)
  • Affordable/Senior/Market-rate Multi-family
  • Student Housing

Brian Johnsen, AIA, is a founding partner of Johnsen Schmaling Architects, a design and research studio whose work has garnered critical acclaim for its conceptual clarity, formal discipline, astute detailing, and an unequivocal commitment to architectural innovation and environmental sustainability. Widely recognized as leading voices in contemporary American architecture, Johnsen and his partner Sebastian Schmaling, AIA, LEEP AP, received an Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York and were featured in Architectural Record’s Vanguard issue as one of ten “exceptional global architecture firms to watch.”  Residential Architect selected Johnsen Schmaling for the Top Firm Award, praising the “stoic brilliance” permeating its work, and Architectural Digest named the office one of “Ten Rising Stars in American Architecture.”

Luke Ogrydziak, AIA is a principal of OPA, an idea-driven architectural studio committed to finding design solutions that both expand the discipline and resonate within their particular context. Shaping and choreographing spatial experiences through the consideration of movement and formal logic results in work that is distinctive for its conceptual clarity and physical presence.  OPA has been internationally published and exhibited for both built projects and research work. Luke Ogrydziak received BA and M. Arch degrees from Princeton University and has taught at Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley.
