AIALA: 1.5 Degree Celsius Symposium (3 LU | HSW per day)

Over the course of two Fridays for half a day, on March 5th and 12th, The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles’ Committee on the Environment (AIA LA COTE) will be presenting the 4th annual 1.5°C Symposium on Climate Change. Renamed “1.5 Degrees Celsius” from 2 Degrees Celsius, the Symposium underscores the urgency for the design and construction industries to provide carbon-mitigating solutions, which will prevent the global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

As in previous years, AIA LA COTE is providing a conference that reflects the most relevant dialogues in society and has incorporated this thinking into a two-day split virtual symposium around Climate Action and Climate Justice. A diverse set of presenters will focus on a wide range of topics, inclusive of Carbon Neutrality, Healthy Building Environments, Resiliency, and Equity.  Such keynote-speakers as Farhana Yamin, an international environmental lawyer and activist, who has co-authored a number of international treaties on climate change, including the Paris Climate Agreement, will lead the days’ sessions.

Day 1, Climate Action – March 5th will include a series of keynote speakers, 2-panel presentations that will discuss Carbon Neutrality and Resiliency from a city, institute, university, and design professional perspectives. This day will also host the highly acclaimed and widely popular “Lunch Think” breakout sessions, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet with a specialist in their field via an intimate online zoom breakout session.

Day 2, Climate Justice – March 12th will include policymakers, institutions, activists, and design professionals, who will address Environmental Activism, Environmental Justice, and will host carbon-efficient technology case studies that speak to the topics of a post-pandemic world.

This year’s virtually-held conference will take place on the Whova and ZOOM online app platforms. We capitalize on the opportunity to share the conference with anyone across the nation or internationally, expanding the conversation outside of the sphere of Los Angeles and into the Global community.
