2024 Lecture Series: Education
Designing within an established campus brings many challenges that will be explored by focusing on key projects on UC Berkeley’s Campus and The College Preparatory School in Oakland.
Project 1: UC Berkeley
Chuck Davis | Architect
As Senior Principal and a Founding Principal, Charles Davis has been a key contributor to EHDD’s body of work as well as an important developer of the firm’s architectural philosophy and practice. With nearly 50 years of experience, Chuck is recognized as an expert in the design of aquariums, zoos, museums, and higher education. In 2003, Charles Davis received the Maybeck award from the AIA California Council in recognition of his outstanding achievement in architectural design. In 2010, he received the Wendy Fisher Award, Association of Zoos and Aquariums for “his inventive, inclusive and inquisitive spirit and for his transformative contributions to aquarium design”.
Wendy Hillis | Client
Wendy has served as Assistant Vice Chancellor at Campus Architect at UC Berkeley since 2019. In this role, she provides strategic and long-range planning for the programming, design, and development of campus properties, including buildings, infrastructure, and landscape projects. This includes oversight of $3 billion dollars of active design and construction projects. Under her leadership, and through the work of Sasaki/Page, the 2021 UC Berkeley Campus Master Plan, received a 2022 SCUP Merit Award for campus planning.
A California native, Wendy was the Campus Architect at Tulane University from 2016-2019. She completed her undergraduate education at UCLA, holds an MBA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia. She was the 2007 recipient of the AIA’s Richard Morris Hunt Prize.
Project 2: The College Preparatory School
For this high school tucked within Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, Jensen Architects replaced outdated portable classrooms with modern, multi-purpose buildings including eight classrooms, a student center, faculty and administration offices, and outdoor flex spaces. Nestled elegantly into the campus hillside, the building’s citing completes a connectivity loop that unites the campus. Through the thoughtful use of windows student learning spaces are passively ventilated and naturally lit, creating healthy learning environments that enable students, teachers, and administrators to do their best work. With the deployment of rooftop photovoltaic panels and high-performing building envelopes the all-electric project is designed to be zero net energy.
Steven Huegli | Architect
Steven Huegli is a Principal and Studio Director at Jensen Architects, a design-oriented architecture firm exploring innovative approaches in search of design solutions that are elegant, effective, and environmentally sensitive. He has successfully led a diverse set of projects serving K-12 Education, University, and Arts and Culture sectors. As Studio Director, Steven cultivates the firm’s design-focused culture by advancing technical knowledge and practice standards through studio-wide leadership, leveraging his recognized expertise in interdisciplinary collaborative design processes.
Monique DeVane | Client
Monique DeVane has been Head of School at the College Preparatory School in Oakland, California since 2011. She has worked in independent schools on both coasts and in the Midwest, serving as a college and guidance counselor, director of admission, director of development, and an assistant head of school for academic affairs. Monique has extensive experience on non-profit boards and presently chairs the Board of the National Association Independent Schools. She holds a BA from Brown University in Organizational Behavior, and an MS in Positive Organizational Development and Change from Case Western Reserve University.
Yasmin Vobis | Moderator
Yasmin Vobis is a registered architect and co-founding Principal of ULTRAMODERNE. She studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley and Princeton University. She was awarded the Founders—Arnold W. Brunner—Katherine Edwards Gordon Rome Prize in Architecture in 2016 and she is currently Assistant Professor in Architecture at UC Berkeley. ULTRAMODERNE is an award—winning architecture and design firm located in Berkeley, CA. Led by co—principals Aaron Forrest and Yasmin Vobis, the office creates buildings and public spaces that are at once modern, playful, and generous. The principals believe that design is not a luxury, but rather fundamental to the construction of all aspects of the built environment.
