Downtown Berkeley’s New Tall Buildings (2 LU) | ULI
Development in Berkeley’s core district was set in a new direction with the Downtown Area Plan of 2012 and recent California laws. Today, more than a dozen tall residential buildings are under construction downtown, with 5,000 housing units in the pipeline.
Few California city districts are growing as tall and as fast as downtown Berkeley. Decades of deficient supply of student housing set the stage for this rapid change in direction. What happened, and what are the challenges to come? Can Berkeley’s experience provide lessons for other California cities?
During this event, we will learn about the accomplishments of forward planning and the tactics of current planning for individual buildings. We will also learn about construction costs, pandemic disruptions, and utility connections and how the capital markets see the development pipeline.
Join us for a guided walking tour of the tall new buildings in Downtown Berkeley, concluding with remarks by a panel of architects, planners, owners, and construction managers who are delivering Berkeley’s next-generation core district. Drinks and networking to follow at a nearby establishment (location TBD).
