Fire Disasters and Prevention Symposium

Want to learn how to prevent fires? We are teaming up with CSI East Bay for an educational event! Come attend the Fire Disasters and Prevention symposium with presentations by industry experts. This is a great opportunity to increase your construction knowledge while earning continuing education credits! This symposium offers 4 LU/HSW AIA credits.

There will be 4 presentations in total:

  • Fire Containment In Design, During Construction, and Occupancy (hosted by Lonnie Haughton, Senior Partner with Richard Avelar & Associates)
  • Oakland Ghostship Fire: – Tragic Loss of Life & Lessons Learned (hosted by Wayne Dutchover and Nick Bartlett of Lawrence Berkeley Lab)
  • Designing with Fire Rated Glass (hosted by Diana San Diego)
  • Your First Line of Defense From Wildfire & Embers (hosted by Brandon Powers)

Timeline & Learning Objectives:

8:00 am – 9:00 am – Fire Containment in Planning and Design, During Construction, and During Occupancy

Participants will learn to:

  1. Evaluate certain key fire and life safety provisions of the California Building Code (CBC) and California Fire Code (CFC).
  2. Consider key competing factors between life safety requirements for new construction versus “grandfather clause” provisions applicable to existing buildings.
  3. Recognize the critical importance of the “matrix adoption tables” found in all of the California’s Title 24 construction codes.
  4. Identify potential performance challenges with fire sprinkler systems installed within single-family homes.

9:10 am – 10:10 am – Oakland Ghostship Fire: Tragic Loss of Life & Lessons Learned

Participants will learn to:

  1. Understand why a tragic warehouse fire claimed the lives of 36 individuals in Oakland, resulting in continuing litigation.
  2. Compare Fire Inspectors subsequent investigations of the causes and effects.
  3. Discover several code violations.
  4. Define information on how they may become more aware of fire safety in their daily lives.

10:20 am – 11:20 am – Designing with Fire Rated Glass

Participants will learn to:

  1. Understand safety glazing requirements and how they apply to various fire rated glazing products.
  2. Identify the difference between fire protective vs. fire resistive glazing based on the code and performance requirements of the application, not the manufacturer’s product testing.
  3. Choose the correct and code approved fire rated glazing products based on current IBC code requirements and applications.
  4. Learn how today’s advanced fire rated glazing products can enhance building’s overall design and performance.

11:30 am – 12:30 pm – Defense from Wildfires & Embers

Participants will learn to:

  1. That our First Line of Defense is by attic and foundation vents.
  2. How to protect by in-tumescent coatings.
  3. How design considerations can prevent spread of fires.
  4. That firefighters have first-hand knowledge of fires and control of health effects of the subsequent clean-up.
